Enough is enough! It's time to break up with Imposter Syndrome

Leave that toxic crap on the porch.

Hi friends, I'm not going to beat around the bush here.

We are constantly spiraling with negative thoughts about whether we are good enough, likable enough, and worthy enough of the successes and accomplishments that come our way.

This isn't the bae we were looking for; no, this sh*t is toxic.

Let's name it, learn from it, and release it: IMPOSTER SYNDROME

Imposter Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon that affects people from all walks of life, preventing them from recognizing accomplishments and fearing being exposed as a fraud. While it can be debilitating, strategies exist to overcome this soul-crushing phenomenon and unlock your full potential. Let's explore effective ways to break up with imposter syndrome and regain confidence in the incredible, capable, and inspiring person you are.

1. Call it out! It's TOXIC!

The first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is to recognize that it exists. By acknowledging the phenomenon, you take an important step toward conquering it. Remember, you are not alone in this experience. So many hugely successful figures deal with imposter syndrome!

"The beauty of impostor syndrome is you vacillate between extreme egomania and a complete feeling of: ‘I’m a fraud! Oh God, they’re onto me! I’m a fraud!’ So you just try to ride the egomania when it comes and enjoy it, and then slide through the idea of fraud.”

Tina Fey

2. Stop the negative self-talk spiral.

Imposter Syndrome often stems from negative self-talk and self-doubt. Challenge these negative thoughts by consciously questioning their validity. Ask yourself, "What is a fact, and what are my feelings?" You'll often find that your achievements and qualifications far outweigh any doubts you may have. For example: That brand DID hire you for that job. You DID complete a killer project and receive awards. YOU CERTAINLY earned your degree. And there’s no debating those facts.

3. YOU DID (ARE DOING) THAT! Celebrate it!

Make a habit of celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Record your successes and refer back to them when you're feeling unworthy. Recognizing your achievements helps build confidence and reminds you of your competence. Remember the progress you’ve made thus far. If you doubt your abilities to complete something, I compel you to reflect on how far you’ve come.

4. Lean on your community for support.

Don't be afraid to reach out for support. Share your self-doubt with trusted friends, mentors, or peer groups like the Accountable Otters Club. Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. Their perspective can offer a fresh outlook and help you gain a realistic assessment of your abilities.

5. Say "YES" to new opportunities that align with your goals.

Imposter Syndrome often arises when you feel you need to know everything before you can consider yourself competent. Embrace the idea that learning is a lifelong journey. Instead of focusing on what you don't know, channel your energy into expanding your knowledge and skill set. When presented with a new opportunity, it's important to differentiate between the voice saying you can't do it because you're not worthy and the one saying you can't do it because you have too much on your plate. The former is your impostor syndrome speaking.

So say goodbye to Imposter Syndrome, and leave that toxic crap on the porch. They are no longer welcome in your home.
